Modern engines produce little vacuum in the intake manifold. To compensate for this, many engines are equipped with a mechanical vacuum pump. This vacuum pump supplies the proper vacuum needed for the brake booster to assist with the power brake systems. The brake vacuum pumps are typically sealed to the cylinder head with a gasket in which if the gasket fails, can produce an oil leak, vacuum leak, or both.
